Tackling Mental Health Concerns: Kota’s Student Help Desk Extends a Helping Hand

In recent months, Kota, a hub for coaching centers, witnessed a rise in distressing incidents, particularly among Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) and NEET aspirants. In response to this alarming situation, a dedicated help desk was established at the New Medical College Hospital on September 10. This initiative aimed to provide much-needed support to coaching students facing mental health challenges.

Addressing Concerns:

Since its inception, the student help desk has actively responded to over 350 complaints within just two months. These complaints ranged from issues of stress and depression to concerns about hostel facilities, fee refunds, social media troubles, and unwarranted calls. Among the received complaints, 35 were related to stress and depression, and these were promptly addressed by professional counselors, ensuring that students received the necessary psychological support.

Proactive Measures:

In September, the Kota administration took several proactive steps to curb the rising incidents of suicides among JEE and NEET aspirants. The Students’ Help Desk, led by ASP Chandrasheel Thakur, played a crucial role in addressing the diverse grievances brought forward by the students. Besides psychological counseling, the desk ensured that issues such as fee refunds, hostel amenities, and unwanted disturbances were also promptly handled.

Counseling Center at New Medical College Hospital:

Recognizing the gravity of mental health concerns, a psychological counseling center was established at the New Medical College Hospital on September 10. This center, in addition to catering to coaching students, is open to the general public seeking mental health assistance. ASP Chandrasheel Thakur emphasized that the center has become a pivotal resource, extending its support beyond coaching students to anyone in need of psychological care.

As Kota continues to grapple with the challenges faced by students pursuing competitive exams, the establishment of the student help desk and the counseling center marks a positive step towards addressing mental health concerns. By providing professional counseling and timely assistance, these initiatives strive to create a supportive environment for students, ensuring that their mental well-being remains a top priority. In the face of academic pressures, these efforts are not just welcome; they are essential in fostering a healthier and more resilient student community.
